Day 55: Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

As we departed Charleston (actually Mount Pleasant) for Savannah, we first made a short detour today to North Charleston to see the home where my wife's parents lived at the time she was born (she was a Navy baby, born on the Charleston Naval Base when her father was stationed here during the Vietnam War). Since they moved back to Oregon when she was just a baby, she has no personal memories of the place, but coming here as been a sort of pilgrimage to the place of her nativity.

After taking some photos of her first home, we ventured a little further to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, established in 1676. The 500 acre grounds are home to a plantation house, slave houses, gardens, forests, and former rice fields, some now flooded and home to alligators, turtles, lizards, and waterfowl. We took a guided tram tour to first get the overall layout and then explored ourselves on foot for the remainder of the afternoon.

Slave cabins.

Virginia live oak.

The Ashley River.

Tasty (shell and all).

This spider was about four inches across.

  1. You're not in Oregon anymore are you! I'm impressed that the photos of the alligators aren't blurry from your shaking!

  2. I have duckweed in my pond. Love it. Glad I don't have an alligator though.

  3. that's a lot of critters. Notice the peanuts have just "salt" and not "sea salt." You're not in foodie nation there.
