Day 70: Scintillating Scenery on the River Road

Continuing our journey westward, today we began by driving the River Road along the Rio Grande through Big Bend Ranch State Park. Along with scintillating scenery, there were mesmerizing mesas and a plethora of plateaus! The first 20 or so miles we stopped every mile or so for photos. For about 50 miles, from Lajitas to Presidio, the road hugged the Rio Grande and the border with Mexico. We were often just 50 or 100 feet from Mexican fields, with houses just beyond.  From Presidio, we turned north toward Marfa and then northwest to Van Horn. We found the scenery less inspiring the farther we went, and combined with the high Texas speed limits, we made good time. We breezed through El Paso just as darkness descended, and the El Paso/Ciudad Juarez metroplex was ablaze with lights. It was likely much more attractive than had we passed through in the daylight. After driving 367 miles, we arrived for the night in Las Cruces, NM. 9,671 total miles traveled.

This place in Terlingua was for sale (in case anyone is in the market).
