Day 16: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

The day dawned sunny and clear for a change, and it was warmer to boot -- we got all the way to 69 degrees this afternoon! Then more clouds moved in and we had a few sprinkles. Today I was able to explore the western end of the Pictured Rocks area, which is part of the National Park System. This is an area with fascinating geology, picturesque waterfalls, dozens of miles of hiking trails, crystal clear water, rugged hills, and hardwood forests about to burst forth with a dazzling display of autumn colors.

Munising itself is a small town of about 2,400 people situated on Munising (also called South) Bay on the south shore of Lake Superior. Like many other small towns in this region, it's seen better times, but tourism is a key industry here because of the unique scenery. A directory lists 19 motels in the immediate vicinity. That's mostly seasonal, though, primarily in the summer. In fact I saw a Dairy Queen with a sign that said, "Closed for the Season," and Larry, the owner of the Terrace Motel and a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, told me that the Pizza Hut just closed permanently the day before I arrived. No big deal for me, since I'm gluten intolerant and can't eat there anyway, but it is a big deal for a town this size. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town's population dropped by nearly 200 people from 2000 to 2010, while the median age rose from 44 to 49 years and just 6% of residents are between the ages of 18 and 24. That's a good indication of young people leaving for opportunities (namely education and jobs) elsewhere. Larry said the main employers here (besides tourism-related jobs) are a paper mill and a prison.

As usual, I'm sharing some photos showcasing the natural and cultural landscape of the area, although once again, photos can't do it justice. You'll have to venture here yourself to see it firsthand! Just tell Larry I sent you.
