Day 8: At the Center of It All!

Right after leaving our hotel this morning we stopped at the monument marking Rugby, ND as the Geographic Center of North America. Every town has a claim to fame! While there I met a couple from Tallahassee, FL. They were both retired high school history teachers, she for 29 years and he for 39. They gave me recommendations for where to visit when I get to Florida: St. Augustine and Appalachicola. St. Augustine is out of our way, but Appalachicola is a distinct possibility.

There were few other highlights today. Passing eastward through the northern Great Plains into the Interior Lowlands the scenery changed very little. I did notice that East of Devils Lake, ND the wheat and hay gave way to more corn and soybeans, and we finally began to see some coniferous trees just before reaching our destination for the night, Bemidji, MN. It is also noticeably more humid. We traveled another 271 miles today, bringing our total to 2,019 miles.

Pedestrian footbridge across Turtle River at Turtle River State Park, ND about 20 miles west of Grand Forks.
View of a small lake from rest area along U.S. Hwy 2 about 30 miles west of Bemidji, MN.
Water towers such as this one at Bemidji, MN are a common sight in the Midwest and Plains.
