Day 48: Black Mountain, NC

Acorns. We never imagined they would keep us awake, but every time the wind picked up last night, we were startled by the sound of them smacking into the metal roof of our cottage. It sounded like a sudden violent hailstorm every time it occurred. Other than that, we love our little home away from home. It's a nice break from hotel rooms.

My wife and I are both battling head colds (congestion and tiredness, mostly), but we still wanted to explore our surroundings. We took a few hours this afternoon to drive and walk around the small community of Black Mountain, population about 8,000. Located at the southern end of the Black Mountains, it has a quaint but small downtown (only a few blocks total) with quilt shops, restaurants, museums, and neat stone and brick buildings. People were enjoying ice cream outside on the sidewalk, and a street musician played a dulcimer outside a music store. Before we ventured downtown, though, we strolled around photogenic Lake Tomahawk, a small reservoir in town with a park, playground, public pool, and senior center on its shores. Fun for all ages! Many people were walking around the lake, some with dogs, and a few people were fishing.  All in all, it was an idyllic Saturday autumn afternoon in this little mountain resort town nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
