Day 51: Myrtle Beach, SC

The perfect weather on this trip continues. This area has a humid subtropical climate, and today was sunny with a high of 80 degrees. Not a bad day at the beach! Myrtle Beach is a town of fewer than 30,000 people, but has nearly 90,000 hotel rooms! Fortunately, October is the off season, so the hotels are mostly empty and the streets fairly quiet. With perfect weather, cheap rates, and no crowds, we couldn't be here at a better time. In summer, hordes of people come here to escape the heat and humidity by playing in the ocean -- or in the hotel water parks.

Looking north from the top of the 200 foot high Sky Wheel. Myrtle Beach is on the Grand Strand, one of the longest continuous stretches of beach in the world (about 60 miles).

Notice the flatness of the topography. This is the Atlantic Coastal Plain, with very low relief. The flatness continues offshore, so the water is quite shallow for some distance out to sea.
